In his celebrated social novel Buddenbrooks, Thomas Mann recounts the story of an upper-middle-class family in 19th-century northern Germany. The narrative spans four generations and forty years: at the outset, the merchant family is respected and prosperous, but over time its fortunes decline dramatically. For this partly autobiographical work, the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature many years after its publication.
